The Sustainable Lifestyle

I have been doing a lot of reading, and research into what something that is Called Sustainable Living. As someone that has a strong belief in minimalism, the concept of Sustainable Living is very attractive. Lets Look at what Wikipedia has to say about Sustainable Living.

Sustainable living is a lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual's or society's use of the Earth's natural resource and his/her own resources. Practitioners of sustainable living often attempt to reduce their carbon footprint by altering methods of transportation, energy consumption and diet.[1] Proponents of sustainable living aim to conduct their lives in manners that are consistent with sustainability, in natural balance and respectful of humanity's symbiotic relationship with the Earth's natural ecology and cycles. The practice and general philosophy of ecological living is highly interrelated with the overall principles of sustainable development.

Lester R. Brown, a prominent environmentalist and founder of the Worldwatch InstituteEarth Policy Institute, describes sustainable living in the 21st century as "shifting to a renewable energy-based, reuse/recycle economy with a diversified transport system."

To be able to live a life style that is self-sufficient, you have be able to have a lifestyle that is also sustainable, and that means that you have to seriously consider every expense that you have, and whether or not you really need to have it. For example, do you really need to have the expense of a car.

With Car ownership, comes insurance payment, maintenance expenses, you have to pay for Gas, and then of course the Car Payment itself. Does the expense justify itself, or are you just getting the car because of the convenience that it brings, or because you are just simply attached to the material object because of some emotional reason. You could eliminate that entire cost in most cases, and use a program like U Car Share. With This program, you pay a $25 sign up fee, and then once approved you can reserve a car or truck that is close to you and then for $4.95 an hour plus mileage you have a car for shopping and other needs when you have to have a car.  This is just one way to cut cost, and help you reach that goal of being Self-Sufficient.

Update: In August 12 of 2011 Uhaul did a reorganization of U Car Share, they rebranded it UhaulCareShare, and either eliminated or reduced locations, and have changed it to a more franchise type of business model. Also Enterprise Rent a Car also now has a Car Share program. Although it is in most major cities it's still a new program and they aren't everywhere just yet. However here is a tv ad they did in September of last year.
